Buckingham Plant Hire, a UK rental company, has announced its exit from the heavy equipment rental business it has operated for 69 years. (Summary translated from International Rental News Network report)

Established in 1955, the company states that this transformation is aimed at focusing on sustainable business sectors within the corporate group. Buckingham has indicated that in the future, it will continue to provide a full range of light equipment services through its ACE Plant brand, acquired in 2016, while working to build a sustainable rental fleet.

The ACE Plant fleet primarily focuses on sustainable solutions, offering equipment such as lithium battery hybrid tower lights and lithium battery all-terrain vehicles (UTVs). This transformation takes place as the company’s Managing Director, Paul Wheeler, announces his retirement after 40 years in the position. He has stated:

“Our philosophy has always been to provide a comprehensive service to our customers and to ensure that our equipment is always in first-class condition through a rigorous maintenance management system. I am proud of the achievements over the years and deeply grateful for the dedication of my colleagues, who have supported the company’s purpose and growth since its inception.”

“Exiting the traditional heavy equipment rental business was a difficult decision as it marks the end of an era. However, the reality is that the heavy equipment industry in the UK is undergoing a thorough transformation, and it is time to pass the baton to the next generation. Discontinuing the heavy equipment fleet is part of the company’s long-term strategy to achieve a sustainable future.”

The third-generation management will continue to be involved in the operations, with George Wheeler serving as the Operations Director for ACE Plant. He adds:

“By retiring our heavy machinery fleet and focusing resources on ACE Plant’s sustainable lithium battery equipment line, we are taking a clear step to support the UK’s net-zero emissions targets. It’s an exciting transformative journey.”

“The shift towards sustainable equipment operations is not only necessary but inevitable. Our investment strategy highlights our commitment to change, ensuring the company operates responsibly and is dedicated to shaping the future of the industry. With the gradual decline in diesel equipment utilization, we look forward to being at the forefront of this pivotal shift.”

As the company begins planning its transition to sustainable products, it has commissioned Euro Auctions to auction off its heavy equipment fleet. The auction will take place at the Buckingham Plant Hire headquarters on February 27, 2025, where 72 pieces of equipment will be auctioned off.

David Betts of Euro Auctions commented:

“We are pleased to announce that we will be holding this one-source auction at Buckingham Plant Hire’s headquarters on Silverstone Road, on February 27, 2025, to auction off their entire heavy machinery fleet.”

“This auction marks the company’s shift from traditional heavy machinery operations to ACE Plant’s lighter and sustainable electric fleet. We expect this impressive range of equipment to attract broad interest.”
